Adhesives

All types of rosin, specially modified rosin resins and their derivatives are significantly used in adhesives impart tack or boost the intrinsic tack of the adhesive polymer.

The rosin resins products are used in such adhesive range like:

Solvent adhesives As the name indicates, the workability and applicability is provided by solving edhesive ingredients in a solvent. Adhesive setting, generally, is achieved by solvent evaporation

Water based (Emulsion) adhesives

In this case, adhesive workability/applicability is provided by solving/dispersing adhesive ingredients in a particular solvent, which is water. Adhesive setting is achieved by water evaporation and in some cases by crosslinking.

Adhesives coumpounded from water soluble ingredients will dissolve again and will lose bonding strenght in presence of water, unless the ingredients have been cured/crosslinked.

Hot melt adhesives

Hot melt adhesives are a class of adhesives which workability and applicability is achieved by melting the ingredient mixture at a specified temperature above the service temperature of the adhesive, most commonly 100-180ºC. Setting is achieved by cooling (and sometimes curing) which makes the adhesive to solidify and gain bond strenght (This kind of adhesives may be defined as an adhesives material which is applied and the bond develops on colling below its melting point.)

Today this class of adhesive composition known as thermoplastic or hot melt adhesives have enjoyed continuous usage increase in many industrial applications since they are water and solvent free.

Hot melt Adhesives are generally based a blended with polymers, copolymers, tackifier resins and modifiers such as waxes and other additives.

PSA adhesives

This type of adhesives bonds to the substract by simply applying pressure at service temperature, commonly at room temperature.

The pressure sensitive adhesive is applied by coating a substract like paper web, plastic films, metal sheets and foils.

The adhesive coating film can be applied from solvent based adhesives, water based adesives or hot melt adesives (hot melt pressure sensitive adesives). If the coating is applied from a solvent based or water based adhesive, solvent or water has to be drawn off by using a drying system (ex oven)

Floor coating adhesives

Floor coating adhesives formulations using rosins and rosin derivatives are mainly adhesives for carpet and vinyl. This type of adhesives can be solvent based or water based, although nowadays most of them are water based.

Generaly, water based formulations for this application, include rosins, rosin derivatives (triethylene glycol esters of rosin, non crystallizing rosin and glycerol esters), acrylic emulsions, plasticizers, fillers and other additives.

Some of above ingredients can be supplied by Pinerosins in a pre-mixed form (Compound), ex: non crystallizing rosin+triethylene glycol ester + plasticizer.

Types of FCA: flooring include wood, carpet, laminate, tile and vinyl.
